Radial Shaft Seals

What are radial shaft seals?

Radial oil seals, also known as Rotary Shaft Seals, serve the purpose of sealing spaces between mechanical components, maintaining lubricants inside and preventing contaminants from getting in.

A seal has three main components: the sealing lip, the metal structure, and the spring.

Components:

  • The lip of the seal consists of a flexible membrane made of elastomeric material, ending at an edge.
  • The metal structure is designed to provide the necessary stiffness for a necessary coupling with the housing.
  • The spring acts as a complement to the lip, helping to compensate for the wear and tear of the elastomeric material.

Common materials include FKM, ACM, NBR, and HNBR. To withstand wear, the durometer (hardness) of the compounds is typically from 70 to 85 Shore A.
